The biggest firm
in La Chaux-de-Fonds
Faced with ever-increasing demand, Portescap had to constantly expand its resources, both human and industrial.
With 200 employees in 1950, and more than 700 in 1957, Portescap became “the watch industry’s biggest non-affiliated and non-watchmaking company.” Growth went on to reach a plateau in the mid-sixties. Until 1973 at least, the workforce remained between 1,200 and 1,300, around 1,000 of whom were employed on the shop floor, most of them for Incabloc. Portescap became the biggest employer in La Chaux-de-Fonds.
Success brought a number of building extensions, financed by profits. By 1960 Portescap owned five main factories with 18,000 m2 of floor space.
